The Houston
Metropolitan Billiard League, known as the HMBL, is an eight-ball
billiard league consisting of 3-man teams. Play takes place on
Tuesday evenings at sponsoring establishments in the Greater Montrose
area of Houston. There is a Fall and Spring season with additional
tournaments held throughout the playing seasons, and each season
culminates with an awards banquet.
The HMBL follows
the rules and regulations of the Billiard Congress of America. |
The
HMBL was created at the apartment of Jim Dorr, the first president
of the league, on January 1, 1988, during a New Year's Day brunch
for prospective members. Among those in attendance were Jim Dorr,
Roger Pruett, Tommy Lovato, Wayne (Cookie) Cook, Bob Cypert, Steve
Mountz, Dennis Colvert, Hal David Parris, Joe Dyson, John Jones,
Steve Shimer, and Don Walley. Alan Gillespie, one of the league's
future presidents, had planned to attend, but was ill.
The league
was officially formed shortly thereafter and played its first
season in Spring 1988. The league was comprised of 8 teams, each
with its own sponsoring establishment. Sponsors included the 611
Club, Past Time, Outpost, Barn, EJ's, Gentry's, Lazy J, and Cousins.
The league was comprised of 5-man teams, each team playing every
other team at its own home and at the other team's home for a
total of 15 games per match. There was one position round, for
a total of 15 matches.
At the beginning
of the Fall Season of 2001the league changed to 3-man teams, for
a total of 9 games per match. There are currently 2 position rounds
per season.
